The missing link- in the ‘I’ of the beholder.

Co-Directors of the series:

There would be no Relational tradition without Interpersonal psychoanalysis. Stephen Mitchell was first and foremost an Interpersonal analyst, trained at the White institute before he and his colleagues began the synthesis that along with Object relations and other traditions would become Relational psychoanalysis. The American Interpersonal tradition had a long and rich history in the United States before the Relational turn that created an international movement.

However, in many places around the world that have embraced Relational psychoanalysis, there have been little study of the Interpersonal tradition from which it had sprung. In fact, there is much more to Interpersonal thinking and ideas, making it a source of knowledge that in many circles has been left untapped. While the Interpersonal tradition has maintained its importance in the United States, it has been relatively neglected elsewhere. Thus, we think it is fair to say that it is “a missing link” to Relational psychoanalytic practice and theory.

In this series we wish to remedy this omission by re-presenting our Interpersonal ancestors, to those who had not been acquainted with them in the first place, and for those who wish to be reminded of them. We will be re-introduced to the works of the Interpersonal pioneers via their clinical publications, by our re-presenters. Each one of our re-presenters is familiar with the interpersonal tradition and is a specialist of his representee. They will present the works of Harry Stack Sullivan, Clara Thompson, Edgar Levenson, and Erich Fromm, and will discuss points of merger and differentiation from Relational psychoanalysis.
